Like others have said, it can be confusing - I find a super soft/but still kind of long cervix sometimes hard to check (I'm pretty new at checking)
Anyway, I too have seen very experienced nurses/midwives/docs be very different from each other...had someone recently checked by two people in a row because they were having a DoulaMommahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17436946151898233317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31166733.post-83866282986486633942008-08-14T18:28:00.000-05:002008-08-14T18:28:00.000-05:00Hey, cheer up. At my last birth, #3 for me, the midwife thought the baby was really up high, tried to push back an "anterior lip" while I was contracting (terrible thing to do, never do this!) and then said I was about 8 - 9 and then left me to labor on my own some more. I then responded, as she was about to leave the room, that I could feel the baby, who happened to be crowning! To have the doc or another nurse tell the patient a different exam is sooo frustrating! I've learned to undercut my exam by 1 cm if they're between 5-8 cm. Saves me embarrassment and them sadness of not really being dilated as far. I've measured with tape with our docs, and Jennifer (Niffer)https://www.blogger.com/profile/14493807264385229076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31166733.post-64776669470413550832008-08-08T18:35:00.000-05:002008-08-08T18:35:00.000-05:00Hi! My sister and I both had 40+ hour labors with posterior cervixes!! No one ever knows what I am talking about when I explain it. I am glad to find someone who went through the same thing. Have you ever had a client with this?minstrelmeghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10311610958533815529noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31166733.post-36502769666362214302008-07-27T11:33:00.000-05:002008-07-27T11:33:00.000-05:00Craptastic. It happens, even to seasoned midwives.
XxLLouisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17777614897667728830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31166733.post-75389657484049553072008-07-21T13:09:00.000-05:002008-07-21T13:09:00.000-05:00It could have changed, though. I've seen dilation be one thing between contractions, and different during contractions; also I've seen a cervix that did close up some, usually due to some malposition issue.
Don't be hard on yourself! It even happens in the hospitals, where they have TONS of experience checking dilation.Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01903424474606383894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31166733.post-14952771300853637582008-07-21T11:52:00.000-05:002008-07-21T11:52:00.000-05:00Hey Don't demorilize yourself!! But basically everyone tells me its just something you have to keep feeling. Oneday you finally understand it all. And anterior lips? Well I had a mom I thought was fully dilated.
